Frequently clients have a lot of questions about auto insurance when it comes to their teen and early 20\u2019s aged drivers.\u00a0 When is it time for them to go on their own policy?<\/p>\n

There are several factors to take into consideration.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The first thing to look at is WHO lives in the household.\u00a0 If your child is still in your home, then they can be listed as a driver on your policy, regardless of their age.\u00a0 If your child is NOT in your household, then they will need their own policy.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We also have to look at who is the titled owner of the vehicle.\u00a0 If you own the car, you\u2019ll want it on your insurance OR you\u2019ll need to be listed as an Interested Party on your child\u2019s policy.\u00a0 That means that if they were to quit paying on the policy and it canceled, you would be notified.\u00a0 (As the owner of the vehicle, you could be responsible if it was being driven without insurance.)<\/p>\n

If your child is the sole owner of the vehicle, it can only be added to your policy if they still live in your household.<\/p>\n

(Some of these rules will vary depending on the age of the driver and if they are away at college or living out of state.)<\/p>\n
