Most people think there are only two kinds of auto insurance \u2013 full coverage and liability only.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Full coverage typically means that someone has liability PLUS collision and comprehensive coverage.\u00a0 That means that they are covered if they cause damage to someone else (liability), if their vehicle is damaged in an accident they cause (collision) and for things like hail damage (comprehensive).<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cLiability only\u201d is the bare bones option that ONLY covers damage that you cause to another person.\u00a0 It means that there is NO coverage for your vehicle included.\u00a0 Why would someone want that?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Liability coverage is what is required by the state in order to operate a vehicle.\u00a0 Without it, you can get a ticket or even lose your license.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

However, collision and comprehensive are only required if you have a lienholder that requires them.\u00a0 Most lienholders do require it, but if your vehicle is paid off then it is up to you to cover the vehicle or not.<\/p>\n

Here are things to consider before choosing to carry liability only:<\/strong><\/p>\n

How much money do you have in savings?<\/strong>\u00a0 If your car was totaled tomorrow, would you have enough to purchase a vehicle to replace it?\u00a0 If you only have enough for a down payment, could you financially handle car payments?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

How much is your car worth?<\/strong>\u00a0 If the car is worth $10,000, then you would be more likely to want to insure that value.\u00a0 If it\u2019s worth only $1,000 or less, you might feel it\u2019s a risk you\u2019re willing to take.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The key here is to think about what would benefit you the most.\u00a0 Look at the insurance cost of liability only or full coverage.\u00a0 (We can run this comparison for you.)\u00a0 Personal finance expert Dave Ramsey says \u201cIt may save you a little money to drop collision insurance on your car, but it usually isn\u2019t worth the risk.\u201d<\/p>\n
